Quick question, please...

Hey guys!

You know who this is!

I just have a quick question, now that the new Star Wars movie is out.

I've noticed that in recent years there has been this infantile competition between Star Trek and Star Wars fans.

When I was growing up, and I will not tell you when that was, anyone who was a Star Trek fan was also a Star Wars fan.  Both were embraced by the fans.

What the hell happened? Why the competitive nonsense?

I was, at one time, a Star Wars fan myself until I grew out of that fandom.

But, even though I am no longer a Star Wars fan myself I still don't understand the animosity between the two camps.

Any suggestions as to why this is?

Until next time...

  1. I think the rivalry is much more all in good fun. There are always a few idiots out there who take things too seriously but let's face it.... The two are really apples and oranges--granted they "space apples" and "space oranges" but they are different enough.

As Will Wheaton pointed out in a recent episode of The Big Bang Theory by appearing as himself accompanying the show's characters to the premier of the new Star Wars film DRESSED IN a Classic Trek uniform and with vulcan ears on!! LOL! . . . The point being...as the audience started booing him, he could say back to them, "Lighten up people, it's still just a movie."

  2. I agree that Star Trek and Star Wars are apples and oranges, one being speculative fiction that raises pertinent questions about social issues as well as the place that mankind has in both the known and unknown universe while the other is a space opera more in the tradition of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.

It probably is mostly in fun, but I do wonder about the few idiots out there as you say, as there are people on both sides of the fence, sadly, who seem to live through their fandom.

I don't watch The Big Bang Theory, but I'm glad that the point was made on the rivalry of the two franchises. People need to lighten up.

You're supposed to have fun :D
