What happened to Trekiverse?
Hello, everyone!
ProvidenceMine here, and I know it's been awhile.
Before you ask, I am still working on finishing the latest adventure of a certain tall, leggy blonde.
However, that's not why I am writing here today.
I have a story that is published in the new archives of the Trekiverse website, but I've been having a problem with it.
And I think I know what the problem is...
Trekiverse is dead.
How do I know this, you ask?
First off, when I tried to connect to the new archive I got this message:
A fatal MySQL error was encountered.
ERROR: Failed to connect to the database!
Then, when I pressed the Contact Us button on the old archive page (which is still up) I got the same message:
A fatal MySQL error was encountered.
ERROR: Failed to connect to the database!
So, I figured that I would leave a comment on their blog. The above message over my comment said as follows:
Your comment is awaiting moderation.
Mind you, I had left this comment on Feb. 5.
That was two days ago.
Then, I went to the Trekiverse newsfeed and I saw what looked like a lot of activity, but then when I looked closer what I was seeing was being repeated over and over, and with different dates going back to 2008. In other words, it was just a repeat loop. There was a recent commentary about ST:DISCO, but that was it.
So, I have to come to the conclusion that Trekiverse is dead.
This is a shame, because there was a lot of excitement over the return of Trekiverse with this new archive they were putting together. I can remember that every time I visited the site, there was always a name of a brand new member who just joined, and promises that awards and contests were also coming back.
I guess the first red flag happened when there were no signs of any writer's awards or contests being revived.
Never happened.
Don't get me wrong, new members kept joining so the site was doing well. It's just that the website was just a place where you published your stories and that was it. No writer's recognition, no special events for writers to participate in like in the past. The last activity that the administrators did was to give a little acknowledgement on the passing of Leonard Nimoy.
That was back in 2015.
Afterwards, nothing.
So, with all of this lack of activity I eventually stopped going to the website. I even unbookmarked
the site under popular websites though I kept the link on this blog for any reader to check it out. I just stopped checking it out. Then, a few days ago when I decided to pare down my blogroll I went to the Trekiverse site out of curiosity.
Well, I don't have to repeat myself. You know what happened next.
BTW, their Facebook and blog's last entries were in 2014. Sorry I forgot to mentioned that earlier.
So, I guess I can say unequivocally and without hesitation that Trekiverse is indeed dead.
Dead as a door nail.
It certainly doesn't help that the site is deemed Not-Secure by Apple, which is another sign of abandonment as no security measures were updated for quite some time.
Oh, well. This is not the first time I had joined a fanbase website that promised a lot but in the end didn't deliver and was in the end abandoned.
Nothing else to say here. For the former administrators of Trekiverse, I wish them well on any endeavors that they may be involved in these days.

Just thinking about it, Trekiverse never had the common decency to notify their members that they were discontinuing with the new database. That would have been the decent thing to do, but decency is something that is lacking these days.
